Arsenal strongest point throughout their successful and not so successful squads has been their strengths in the midfield department. Even this season they have tremendous depth in the midfield with players who have done relatively better than the players from midfield from other teams.
Arteta was wonderful last season but let’s be honest this season hasn’t been so good for him and it’s probably because he is aging.
John Cross of The Daily Mirror is reporting that Arsenal, and Arsene Wenger, is targeting Bayer Leverkusen’s Lars Bender as Mikel Arteta’s heir apparent in the center of the midfield:
He said, “Arsene Wenger has identified Lars Bender as his No1 summer target to strengthen Arsenal’s midfield. Manager Wenger wants a midfield general to strengthen the Gunners’ squad and sees the Bayer Leverkusen anchorman as the ideal fit. More importantly, Wenger believes Bender would add physical presence and technical ability to his midfield, giving the defense more protection.”
Arsenal went for the player last transfer window, seeing a bid around £19 million rejected. With Leverkusen sitting three points behind Schalke for the Bundesliga’s last automatic Champions League spot with two matches left to play, and with WfL Wolfsburg a mere point behind them, the Nordrhein-Westfalen club might be more apt to sell.
