Andre Villas-Boas believes that Wayne Rooney is the biggest threat one can receive from Manchester United, not Robin van Persie.
This season has not been one of Rooney’s best seasons but he scored the only goal of the game against the Hammers on Wednesday and took his team to victory.
Robin van Persie has scored 21 goals this season but that is not enough to scare Villas-Boas.
“We’re always very unlucky, as he seems to return just in time for our games,” said AVB.
The former Chelsea boss took his side to their first ever win at Old Trafford in the Premier League era in September. Rooney was brought on in the second half and the game became very fierce, but United could not score a goal to level the score.
“We recognise that we had a fantastic first half in that game but he came on in the second, made a difference and created lots of problems for us.
“He has had the midweek game against West Ham to come back to form and so we’ll just have to wait and see if he is selected or not.
“But I think he’s the player who makes Man United tick because of his movements and the fact that he always sacrifices himself for the team.
“Also, because of his team spirit, desire to win and his focus. He has overcome some difficult moments in his career but he’s a top quality footballer.”
AVB claimes that Rooney and Van Persie’s partnership was one of the best attacking-partnerships ever.
“For United, Van Persie is a tremendous success. Another transfer with immediate impact, immediate results, immediate return,” he said.
“A player who last year impressed, his level of form was incredible.
“To make a move to even a bigger club, the way he has arrived, is something outstanding.
“He is the big difference at this moment between the Manchester clubs.”
Tottenham will host the Red Devils on Sunday.
