Last weekend’s vital triumph over City might bring a sense of the ‘After the Lord Mayor’s Show’ to United’s next Premier League outing against Sunderland. However, it is vital that the Red Devils maintain their concentration this Saturday afternoon, and throughout the notoriously busy and important Christmas period of football.
It would be very easy for the United faithful to get slightly complacent, expecting a straightforward home win against the struggling Black Cats.
In contrast, they should not be expecting any early Christmas presents from what will prove to be another difficult league game. This game should be treated with the same importance as the derby last week so as to avoid similar defeats as United succumbed to at the hands of Everton and Tottenham earlier in the season.
So often, the match following such an impressive win can prove to be just as important as the match which preceded it. It would be such a shame to see 3 easy points dropped after all that hard work to claw 6 points clear of Manchester City in the title race.
If City were to beat Newcastle and United were to slip up at home to Sunderland it would completely undo the efforts of the previous week. The excitement at the Etihad has succeeded in kick-starting the hype of the title race in a manner which was not present earlier in the season. It seems ‘squeaky bum time’ has arrived earlier than usual this season.
Therefore, what all United fans expect is their team to play with the same team confidence in which they did last Sunday, in order to maintain their lead over City, and solidify their place at the top of the Premier League.
