United were very keen on signing the Spaniard last summer transfer window as they wanted a midfielder in their squad whose playing style was similar to Cesc Fabregas. But due to some complicated issues in the negotiations the deal fell at the last moment despite the midfielder wanting to join the Red Devils.
Herrera, along with Everton’s Leighton Baines and Borussia Dortmund’s Ilkay Gundogan, is understood to be on Moyes’ winter transfer radar.
If United were willing to match the Spaniard’s release clause this time around or were able to agree a price with Bilbao, Herrera is likely to be on his way to Manchester in January as a Spanish source has told SportsDirect News the player himself is keen to join the Premier League champions.
Meanwhile, Moyes is expected to revive his interest in Baines this winter having seen his three bids for the England left-back turned down over the summer.
United are lagging 12 points behind Arsenal which is a huge number and to ensure the berth in the Champions’ League next season they will have to strengthen their squad to match the likes of Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea.
