Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that he will be now be looking to rotate Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic for the remaining season as to keep both of the defenders fit.

Rio and Vidic have not started a game together since Vidic returned. Vidic had picked up a knee injury last season, and had to suffer for it this season as well.

The defenders had been defending together for more than seven years together since Vidic joined United from Spartak Moscow. However, both of them are not getting much of playing time together now, considering their ages and fitness. Jonny Evans has become a permanent squad member and has been starting for the last four consecutive games. Ferguson also hinted that Evans is his first choice now.

After what seems like a long time, Ferguson has all his defenders fit including Chris Smalling and Phil Jones.Ferguson said: “We are rotating at the moment with Rio and Vidic. The return of Smalling and Jones is definitely a help because we can then alternate Vidic and Ferdinand.

“Jonny Evans has been absolutely magnificent and he’s progressed by playing regularly. With Smalling and Jones, their careers at United have been interrupted by injury, and you hope long-term things will settle down for them and they’ll be OK.

“But it’s good to have them all because they’re all very good players.”

Patrice Evra has also been featured a lot as a key defender these days, especially since he has improved his formed a lot. It is assumed that the arrival of Alexander Büttner has motivated him to work harder, as Büttner is his competitor.
