Sir Alex hopes that when Arsenal fans visit Old Trafford this Saturday, they wil be nice to their former captain Robin van Persie.
The Dutchman remained a huge fan-favourite at Arsenal before he rejected their offers of signing a new contract. He instead joined United. Wenger also hopes that his fans would greet their former captain with great respect.
“I think Arsene has laid his seed for his supporters in terms of respecting him,” stressed the manager. “If you think about all the former players who come back to Old Trafford, they always get a warm applause. I don’t think that will be a problem tomorrow, I think the fans will recognise the eight years he gave them and that will be nice.”
Sir Alex is very impressed with Robin van Persie who has made his mark since he joined United.
“Robin is a mature player and I think that helps,” he stated. “The experience he’s got of playing eight years in England makes it easier for him to play for another English club. He’s been very satisfying for us. He’s made a fantastic start for us and hopefully he can keep it going.”
Arsene Wenger has also spoken on the matter of respect to Robin.
“I hope it [reception] is a respectful one because he did very well for us [for eight years],” said Wenger.
I don’t think that will be a problem,” he said. “I think the fans will recognise the eight years he gave them and it will be nice.”
How the fans react and how Robin celebrates if he scores will be witnessed on Saturday.
