After what seems like ages, United now has some options available on defence as Sir Alex will next select a team. Chris Smalling is close to joining Rio Ferdinand, Jonny Evans, Patrice Evra and Alexander Buttner.
Sir Alex Ferguson had struggled with a lack of defenders when Chris Smalling and Phil Jones were both injured before the season even started. Jonny Evans had a dead leg last week but he returned to face Newcastle and score a goal against them. However, Nemanja Vidic’s injury added to the trouble as the United captain is still sidelined.
The defence by Manchester United was superb as the fans seemed pleased with the performance. However, Smalling will be trying to earn a position in the squad before United face Stoke at home after the international break. As Sir Alex was greatly pleased with Rio Ferdinand and Jonny Evans’ performances, it will be hard for Smalling to get some place in the team.
“Ferdinand and Evans were magnificent [at Newcastle],” emphasized Sir Alex. “Absolutely brilliant. That kind of form definitely gives you a solid base. It gives us a security and enables the midfield players and front players to get on with their jobs. They cleared everything.
“We’ve got to get consistency in the performances and in the results. Once we get that, we’ll get into a rhythm. We’ve got the squad to deal with all the games, we’ve got a really good squad. And after the international break, we’ll have Chris Smalling back which will be another addition to our squad which is very important.”
The biggest question is that whether Smalling would please the Boss enough to earn a place in the team or not.
