Manchester United’s legend Ryan Giggs has said that Lionel Messi is the best player in the Champions League, not his former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo.
Though Ronaldo had played with Giggs for six years, Giggs chose the Argentine over the Portuguese star.
Giggs was asked about who the greatest ever Champions League player is, and he replied: “You have to think Messi. At the moment he is breaking all sorts of records. He is one of the greatest players to ever live and he has won it a couple of times.
“I would have to go for Messi. He is a goalscorer – he scores so many goals – but he is a team player as well.
“He sets up so many goals for his teammates and having experience playing against him, he is tough. It is difficult to get the ball off him.
“He can dribble, he can score any type of goal, left foot, right foot, headers. He has got so many assets – it’s very, very tough to pin him down.”
Manchester United will play Ronaldo for the first time since he moved to Santiago Bernabeu in 2009 for £80m. United will face Madrid in the Champions League knock-out stage.
However, before that, the question of Ballon d’Or is to be answered. Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Andres Iniesta are the three candidates for this prestigious award. The award will be presented on January 7th. Messi has won the last three Ballon d’Or awards while Ronaldo has won it only once, in 2008.
