Sky Sports journalist Graeme Bailey has revealed that Manchester United are in for the Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen. He claims that United have already made a move to land the defender at the Old Trafford.
However, he did not reveal the details as his tweet only said: “We are hearing Manchester United have made a move for Thomas Vermaelen.”
It is not the first time that Vermaelen has been linked away from the club since the player has made a limited number of appearances for Arsenal. The 28-year-old only has one year of his contract with the Gunners left.
This has alerted both Manchester United and Fiorentina who are trying to sign this player.
Manchester United are without a central defender after Nemanja Vidic left United for Inter Milan while Rio Ferdinand was not offered a new contract by the club.
Vermaelen’s rumoured to be worth around £12million.
However, it should be remembered that Arsene Wenger said that he would not like to sell the player back in January. His exact words:
“I’m open to it, I’m ready to extend his contract. Of course we want Thomas Vermaelen to be happy and to have the number of games a player of his class deserves. But on my side I have a huge respect for his quality and attitude and I am ready to extend his contract.”
