It’s not at all surprising that Tottenham start aiming their guns towards players who are scouted initially by The Gunners. First it was Capoue then Erik Lamela and now it’s Di Maria. Di Maria before Ozil was Arsenal’s prime target but it turned out to be a blessing in disguise that Arsenal landed Ozil, the signing which totally changed the mood and atmosphere around the Emirates.
In an interview with Spanish publication AS, the 25-year-old blamed journalists for peddling all the various transfer speculation, which has also seen him linked with a move to AS Monaco.
The Argentina international was also believed to be on the radar of Arsenal’s north London rivals Tottenham, who – under the former stewardship of Andre Villas-Boas – were keen to add him to their senior squad at White Hart Lane, following the departure of Gareth Bale to Real Madrid.
Despite the arrival of the €100million man, Di Maria has – for the majority of the season – retained his place in Carlo Ancelotti’s side, and was on the scoresheet as Real Madrid beat Valencia 3-2 in La Liga on Sunday.
But The South American speaking to the journalists said, “I’m happy at Real Madrid. I have never asked for a (contract) renewal. A player who does not play is not going to ask for a renewal. My head is in Madrid. You (journalists) said that I was going to Tottenham. You know where this information came from.”
