Though injuries are a blow to a player and his career, Casillas’ injury will be a blow to Real Madrid as well. However, it is a boost to Manchester United as Madrid Captain will now miss both the fixtures against the Barclays Premier League table leasers. The first leg will be played on February 13th at Santiago Bernabeu while the second leg will be played at Old Trafford on March 5th.
Casillas broke his thumb when he collided with Valencia’s defender and he seemed to be in a lot of pain. He was substituted and Adan took his place on the pitch.
The official statement on realmadrid.com has revealed:
“After carrying out initial x-rays at the La Moraleja Sanitas Hospital it has been confirmed that the footballer Iker Casillas has suffered a fracture at the base of the first metacarpal on his left hand.”
The metacarpal is the bone that joins with all the fingers and the thumb so a fracture on that means that Casillas’ hand will not be able to work as it usually does. Though the first metacarpal can be the thumb and the little finger, but in Casillas’ case it looks more like his thumb.
If Casillas is not operated, he will miss 6 weeks of football and will thus miss out both games against United. However, if his injury turns out to be more severe, he will have to be operated and that means he will miss out 8 weeks because such surgeries take long to recover.
It is said that Casillas’ injury will have no long term effects on his career.
Adan will be replacing Casillas for the time he will be gone.
