David de Gea was quick to defend Rio Ferdinand for the England job claiming that he was still one of the best defenders in Europe.
Though Ferdinand did not have a good game against Tottenham which United lost 3 – 2, he played superb against Newcastle. United took a clean sheet in that match.
De Gea said that even at the age of 33, Ferdinand was capable of doing great and could not understand Roy Hodgson’s decision.
De Gea said: “For me, Rio is one of the best central defenders in Europe. I don’t believe that people cannot realise his level. He still has the quality to be one of England’s star players.
“I am not Hodgson, but personally I would always have Rio Ferdinand on my list for England matches.”
David de Gea was also questioned about his position in the team. He has been in competition with Anders Lindegaard for a while now and the team is facing a goalkeeper rotation almost in every match.
De Gea saved a questionable goal which was just over the line against Newcastle. He had, however, made some great saves against CFR Cluj.
“I am working flatout every day because I need to regain the confidence of the coach,” added De Gea.
“For me, a training session is a match and after that it is necessary for me to show what levels I can achieve in games.
“I ended last season satisfied with my work for Manchester United, but it is quite normal to go back to zero at the start of the following season. I don’t believe I have been at the top in the last couple of months but with each game I am rediscovering my level.
“I accept the manager’s decision. If he considers Anders as number one it is not a problem for me I only want to problem for me and I only want to maintain my challenge for the position. I am young and it isn’t easy to be the number one at United, even though that was the case last season. Now I just want to repeat that.
“I am confident enough to order around my team-mates, even though they are older than me. The manager says that, in the area, I am the boss!
“I always dreamed of succeeding at a club like United. From the moment I arrived, I knew that it wouldn’t be easy. This is not a simple club. It has huge power and support all around the world.”
De Gea also realises that when he is the man in the goal, there is a lot of pressure on his shoulders as he is playing for one of the greatest clubs ever.
De Gea also mentioned that he is delighted to see the partnership between Persie and Rooney growing.
He said: ”Robin is 100 per cent professional and he could adapt to any club. The understanding between him and Rooney has been very positive in training sessions and in every game they play together they will connect and create danger.
“Robin could be a serious contender for the Premier League’s Golden Boot this season.”
Well, nobody has doubts about that.
