Although The Gunners have been linking continuously to FC Porto’s quality striker Jackson Martinez all winter, but The Porto man is continually talking up a transfer and has refused to sign a new contract because he doesn’t want his buyout clause to raise any further and scare potential buyers off.
But this time interestingly the speculation is not from FC Porto, it’s from Benfica’s star striker Rodrigo who is just 22 years old and is sighted by many as the upcoming quality star.
The 22 year old joined Benfica from Real Madrid in 2010 and took his time to settle in, although he’s more of a fixture now. He has a contract running until 2019 so Benfica are under no pressure to sell the young Spaniard because of that but they need to offload players to ease financial worries. O Jogo also report today that it’s unlikely Nemanja Matic will be the only exit this winter transfer window, explaining that a further three players could be sold to balance the books.
Benfica had been rumoured to be negotiating a €30m move for Rodrigo to Russia, but O Jogo say he’s not interested in that. His agent and father, Adalberto Machado, won’t move to a less competitive league than Portugal and Rodrigo still has dreams of a future with the Spanish national side. Arsenal wouldn’t want to pay €30m, that would make Rodrigo vastly overpriced, but they probably wouldn’t have to with Benfica under pressure to sell to raise money.
