They say the sky is a limit but for football rivalries, there are absolutely no limits for these fans. Banter, to an extent, is okay but sometimes, it just gets a bit too much.

As Manchester United controversially defeated Liverpool this Sunday, fans were quick to react and started their usual arguments over the penalty and the red card.

Hasley, who refereed the match, was greatly criticized by Liverpool fans for his decisions. Hasley had been diagnosed with throat cancer in 2009 but he recovered and returned to his job in March 2010. He gave a red card to Jonjo Shevley for his challenge to Jonny Evans. He later awarded a late penalty to United which gave them the winning goal.

Some Liverpool fans, on Twitter, abused him for his decisions wishing that he had died of cancer. The tweets were: “I hope Mark Halsey gets cancer again and dies” and “Mark Halsey should’ve died of cancer.”

However, both of the tweets received great anger from other people and they either deleted the tweets or their accounts were suspended. Now the matter is also in the hands of Greater Manchester Police after the official complaint by Hasley.

The Premier League officials did not speak on this matter.
