Arsenal are already short of options in the heart of the Arsenal defense with Vermaelen looking keen for an exit where he can get more playing time. This time of the window there won’t be much players available for the Gunners to land in and they’ll have to do their best to hold onto their assets and certainly Sagna is one of them.
Sagna is out of contract this summer and has so far refused Arsenal’s offer of fresh terms, leading to reported interest from the likes of Manchester City, Monaco, Paris Saint-Germain in a free transfer for next season.
Wenger has been unable to convince the 30-year-old that his long-term future remains in North London but refused to be downbeat on the Sagna situation, insisting that the French international has shown nothing but complete commitment to the cause this season and remains integral to his plans.
In his pre-match press conference the Gunners boss told the club’s official website:
“At the moment if Sagna doesn’t extend his contract we’ll have to [consider] that but [for now] we look at Southampton’s game more than the long-term future. We try to of course secure Sagna because for me he’s a very important player for the group, but he’s fully committed and as long as he stays here he will be fully committed in every single game.”
