Arsene Wenger believes that “the desire is there” for Arsenal to make sure that Walcott stays at Arsenal. His contract is due to expire in the summers but his excellent form has forced the Gunners to make him stay.
Wenger spoke of keeping the England forward in his squad for the future, and said “We are talking. It is very difficult to be predictable in these kinds of situations but our desire is there to do it as quickly as possible and ready to do it.”
Walcott has scored 14 goals for Arsenal in all competitons this season, and this has been his best tally since he joined the North Londoners from Southampton in 2006.
Walcott had insisted on playing as a centre forward and he has proved that he is worth the position after he scored a hat-trick against Newcastle in Arsenal’s 7-3 victory over them.
“He definitely has all the attributes to play up front,” said Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Walcott’s team-mate after the Newcastle match.
“The goals are coming. He has proven he can do a really good job for us up there.
“For someone with his pace it’s hard for anyone to defend against and when he gets the service he can always punish teams so he’s doing really well.
“His performance was amazing. You could see after his first goal he had a spring in his step but he has been like that all season. He has been brilliant.”
Walcott had turned down a contract offer worth £75,000 a week in the summer and since then, the talks between the club and Walcott have not reached any grounds.
Rumours suggest that Arsenal will not meet his £100,000 a week demand, but would rather agree around £90,000.
