Spanish source MundoDeportivo claim that Athletic Bilbao are planning to launch a summer bid for Arsenal’s defender Nacho Monreal.
Monreal has been at Arsenal for 18 months only. He was a January signing which was largely influenced by Kieran Gibbs’ injury. He has played Arsenal’s preseason as make-shift centre back and there has been no hint from the club at their plans of selling him.
Arsenal have long suffered from the curse of an inconsistent squad as their major stars keep leaving each summer. Wenger will retain as many players as he could to make sure that his squad – defence especially, remains consistent.
Arsene Wenger’s transfer priorities this summer are a defensive midfielder and a centre-back. Also, the Gunners’ captain Thomas Vermaelen is on his way out so adding another transfer priority could become a headache for Wenger.
The Spanish press has a thing for linking Spanish players back to their home country so it does not as a big surprise from MD. Nacho Monreal is entitled to stay at Arsenal till 2017 according to his contract and he seems very happy in London. This means that the player is going to stay in London.
